Oak Leaf Acorn

When I was a kid I used to try to eat acorns. Squirrels make them look so delicious, but they taste horribly bitter. Now I am grown up (mostly), and thanks to the internet I discovered that you can eat acorns from white oak trees. Our yard is full of oak trees so I’m going to have an acorn feast this fall.

Supposedly you shell the acorns and boil them in multiple pots of water until the water stops turning brown (this removes the bitter tasting stuff called tannin). Then you roast them at 225 degrees (F) for 20 minutes they get crunchy and delicious.

You can also grind the acorns to make acorn flour and acorn pancakes. But that seems like an awful lot of trouble. After all, I don’t live on the prairie or anything.

Isn’t it weird that they are called “acorns” instead of “oak nuts?”

  2. P.S We used to have a dachshund that thought it was a squirrel. He would pick up acorns and bring a little pile to us. Haha.
