Gardening Jitters

February 18th, 2010

When we moved into our house 1.5 years ago the yard was overgrown with brush, ivy and briars. Last fall we hired a guy with a bulldozer to haul it all away and plant grass seed. Now it is almost spring, I have a big blank slate, and I don’t have any excuse to put off gardening. But, landscaping is so much scarier than fixing up the inside of the house. Living things can potentially die by my hand!

Maybe a little inspiration will help me get over the jitters…

I collected these photos a few years ago, so unfortunately I don’t have the sources.

  1. I know how you feel. We moved into our house 4 years ago, and gardening still makes me nervous. Moving plants around is a whole lot harder than moving furniture is- and the sofa isn’t going to die!
But my mom always tells me to relax, do a little at a time and see how it goes, or grows. Sometimes, I listen.

Start slow, and do a section at a time. And include a place to sit and enjoy the plantings while you drink an ice cold lemonade.

whiteflowerfarm.com sells packages of stuff that goes together, and they give you little plans for plotting! it’s awesome, i’m in love with this one, but it depends where you live! (and ignore the price, that was just me dreaming! they have lots of affordable options!) http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/83206-product.html

Those photos are definitely inspiring me. Now I want to redo our yard.

The great thing about landscaping, is that you can use lots of stone, and a couple of bushes and trees without fear of them dying. And beyond that, since most flowers and veggies are seasonal, if they don’t work out you can just start over (unlike with remodeling a house which is pretty much a fixed thing)!!!

I love your comments more than I love chocolate (almost).
