Happy Memorial Day

Posted by Amanda (wit & whistle) on May 31st, 2010 under Personal Tags: , , ,  •  2 Comments

We just finished our Memorial Day feast. Hotdogs and corn on the grill, fruit salad, and potato salad. Daniel even toasted the hotdog buns!  Fruit salad tip: If your fruit isn’t perfectly ripe pour margarita mix all over the fruit salad, and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours. You will not [...]

Kitchen Tweaks

Posted by Amanda (wit & whistle) on May 28th, 2010 under Home + Garden Tags: , , , ,  •  6 Comments

I’ve been neglecting my sketchbook in favor of tweaking the kitchen a bit. Here’s a little before and after action. (Click photo to view larger.) I hate-hate-HATED the curvy molding above the sink, but the way our cabinets were built would make taking it down a huge pain. Instead I got a thin piece of [...]

Have you ever seen Invisible Creature’s illustrations? I wouldn’t mind having these monsters living under my bed!

Home Again

I’m back from Florida! We visited the Everglades, tried alligator tail (yum) and frog legs (gag), played on the beach, and I managed to get sunburned through three coats of SPF 50. All in all it was a nice long weekend.

DIY: New Molding for an Old Vanity

Posted by Amanda (wit & whistle) on May 19th, 2010 under Do It Yourself Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,  •  6 Comments

Our bathroom vanities are really old. 39 years old to be exact. Replacing them isn’t an option since they are irregular sizes, and I don’t want to disturb the groovy retro hex tiles on our bathroom floors. So, with my new miter box and saw (thanks Dad!) I added molding to the cabinet doors. With [...]

Posted by Amanda (wit & whistle) on May 18th, 2010 under Recipes Tags: , ,  •  1 Comment

We got another head of cabbage in our produce delivery last week, and I wanted to try cabbage soup. I made this recipe from 101 Cookbooks and ate every last drop. Serve it with warm buttered toast, and it’s perfect on a rainy day. Photos and recipe by 101 Cookbooks 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil [...]

Apple Dumpling FAIL

Posted by Amanda (wit & whistle) on May 13th, 2010 under Recipes Tags: , , ,  •  3 Comments

I had never made anything with Phyllo dough before, but I found an apple dumpling recipe in the new Sweet Paul Magazine and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately the recipe wasn’t clear about how much Phyllo dough to use, or it could be that I am just a Phyllo-dough-idiot. I assumed that each [...]

Beautifying the Home Office: Part 2

Posted by Amanda (wit & whistle) on May 12th, 2010 under Home + Garden Tags: , , , , , ,  •  5 Comments

Remember my plan for fixing up my husband’s home office? I finally implemented it, and I’m quite happy with the results.  I intend to collect a few more illustrations to hang above my desk, and a vintage world globe I snagged for $2 on ebay is on it’s way here, but other than that it’s finished. [...]
