North Carolina Museum of Art

September 28th, 2010

I’ve been to the North Carolina Museum of Art one billion(ish) times, but recently they added a completely new building, so my Mom and I went to investigate. I think the new building looks like an ugly storage facility of some sort, but I’m no architect. Maybe it’s so cutting edge that I just don’t get it!

Much of the artwork inside was the same old stuff moved over from the old building, but my new favorites include an assemblage of weird lumpy faces, a huge transparent man sitting on the wall, and a Mona Lisa made entirely of spools of thread. The sweet potato fries at the new museum restaurant are works of art themselves. Yum!

I have a friend who used to be an art teacher. She has a garden with lovely beds of flowers and vegetables. Surrounding the various beds are river rocks. Intermingled with the river rocks are heads similar to these. I asked her about them and she said that it was an annual art project she had for her students and these were the heads that went unclaimed by their makers. It was a very interesting effect seeing those faces staring up at you.

  2. Oh I was just there in June! Loved it!

  3. Beautiful photos! I do think the building looks artsy!

I love your comments more than I love chocolate (almost).
