When I got married my Grandmother (aka Grammy) filled a notebook for me with page after page of her best recipes. It’s one of my favorite wedding gifts. I tried out her bread recipe over the weekend. She titled it “hot rolls,” but to me it will always be “Grammy Bread!” Just the smell of the dough rising reminded me of visiting her house as a kid. I finally opened my homemade plum jam, and it was perfect on a slice of warm bread.
1 cup boiling water
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup oil
1/4 cup lukewarm water
1 package active dry yeast
1 egg
3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
Mix the first four ingredients in a large bowl. Let the mixture cool to lukewarm. In a cup mix yeast and 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Beat the egg and add it to first mixture. Next add the yeast mixture. Add the flour, and mix well. Refrigerate the dough for 2–24 hours.
To make rolls: Knead the dough a few times. Pinch off 1 1/2″–2″ balls and place them in a greased pan. Cover with a dish towel and let them rise for about an hour or until double in size.
To make loaves: Knead the dough a few times. Divide the dough in half and shape two loaves. Place them in 2 greased 9″ x 5″ bread pans. Cover with a dish towel and let them rise for about an hour or until double in size.
Bake at 350 degrees F until golden brown. (My two loaves took about 30-45 minutes. Rolls would probably be done more quickly.) Brush with melted butter while warm.

I love this post! What a great idea for a wedding gift! Thanks for sharing your recipe. Maybe I’ll give this a try this afternoon.
What a wonderful, meaningful wedding present from your grandmother! The bread looks delicious :)

I am making this RIGHT now :) super excited about it
I have to refrigerate the dough for 2 hrs or 24 hours ? Is that an avoidable step ? Can’t wait :)
2–24 hours—it’s a range. Refrigerate for any amount of time between 2 and 24 hours. I don’t know if you can skip this step, I never risked it. ;)
I made this…easy and perfect. Thx for the recipe.the dough was very gooey and I had to dust a lot of flour fot kneading. Hope that is how it done . The end result was god though.. And the smell while it is rising and baking…heavenly :)
