Interior Style Diagnosis

August 15th, 2011

Red has been the dominant color in our living room for the past 5 years or so. Red and I have had a nice long run, but I’m ready for a change. I have a folder on my computer that currently holds 1,187 photos of interior design inspiration that I’ve been collecting since college. The folder contains a huge range of styles, but there’s a big difference between admiring a room and wanting to live in it.

Over the weekend I sifted through the entire folder and set aside all the rooms I could actually see myself living in. The folder went from 1,187 to only 57 photos. From there I narrowed it down to a handful of favorites. Based on these photos I seem to be drawn to neutrals, a bright and airy feel, a bit of mid century modern, and a hint of rustic charm. When it comes to interiors, do you have a clear style, or are you constantly trying to figure it out like me?

  1. since getting married, my husband and i have gotten pretty good at marrying our styles. mine: lots of white, airy space, with hits of bright color (teal, purple, pink, orange) & fun accents. his: dark brown EVERYTHING. with some black. and maybe a little red. it hasn’t been easy :) we’ve compromised amazingly and to a great end with our new apartment – light wood floors and kitchen cabinets, open concept and huge windows lend an airy feel, balanced with our brown leather couch, almost-black dining table & coffee table, and deep dark granite countertops. with color here and there, in trinkets & accents (the finer details were always more my thing than his, so i get to pick most of them). and surprisingly, it all works fabulously!

Your new apartment sounds lovely! Lucky for me my husband doesn’t have any opinions about decorating, so he just goes along with whatever I decide. It’s one of his best qualities haha! ;)

That second photo is probably the closest to how I *want* my living room to look, but I change my mind quite often! My boyfriend converted our little cottage from stables so it’s had quite a rustic feel… I might have to mix it up a bit now!

I started a folder in college as well. I only have about 500 images or so – I just graduated this year though, so I still have time to catch up! :) I’m not totally sure what my style is, but I always seem to love the interior photos you post. I think you do have a clear style and don’t even know it!

  4. I also have a set of inspiration folders! Just started mine two years ago… I love all your choices (and had two of ‘em in my files!O Perhaps you’ve done the work of figuring out my style for me, too. ♥

I love your comments more than I love chocolate (almost).
