Hobby Compatibility Quiz & Creative Dating Guide

Number 11 on my 28 by 29 list is to find a new hobby that Daniel and I both enjoy. To accomplish this I made a list of all the hobbies I could think of/find on the internet. I printed them out and asked Daniel to mark all the hobbies he enjoys or would be interested in trying, and I did the same. Then I highlighted the ones we both marked to see where our common interests lie. Stop motion animation, pottery, visiting a shooting range, making stained glass, skydiving, film making, and building birdhouses are just a few of the hobbies I would have never imagined we’d both be interested in. Now we can kiss boring movie date nights goodbye!

If any of you want to try this with your significant others I’ve made a little worksheet of my list. You can download the pdf here. I’m calling it the “hobby compatibility quiz & creative dating guide”. Daniel thoroughly mocked me for that title, but I’ll have the last laugh when we make our first film!

I {big fat puffy heart} this! I’ll be celebrating my 7th wedding anniversary later this year, and hubby and I have gotten pretty lackluster in our dating creativity. In the early days, it was easy… he made me fall in love with baseball, and together we both (redundant?) really enjoy live music, and it wasn’t difficult to find fresh, fun things to do together. After almost 8 years together, and a child, it’s difficult to get beyond the Yo Gabba Gabba routine (our kid is a toddler). I think this list may just be a lifesaver (funsaver). Thanks!
PS: I think the title is cute!

I knew my boyfriend in a tango lesson. So that was our commun hobby, but lately we stopped enjoy dancing. That is weird because we both really loved it before starting to date!
I tought that dancing tango was our way to express and exorcise our sadness and loneliness, but now that we have found each other we are super happy and we can’t dance well anymore.
So maybe we have to change hobby, or maybe we have to find new motivation for dancing tango

Maybe you just need to find a different type of dance to express your happiness!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your Hobby Compatibility Quiz & Creative Dating Guide. I was hoping you wouldn’t leave us hanging and you didn’t disappoint. After 30 years of marriage I was needing help getting creative date ideas. This should kick start something. :D

    This is sweet!

P.S. You need to do “a day in the life of” post. Reason: everyone likes to see pictures of your house, dogs and drawings and how those things mix into your everyday life. That’s my random thought of the day. :)

Good idea Joy, I’ll have to do that. Although I don’t know how exciting it will be, haha! ;)

Amanda this is such a great post and take away! I will definitely print this out for my husband and I to fill out, then pin it up on the fridge to remind us when we are looking for something to do together. Thanks!

I love this- I’m so excited I stumbled across your blog. My hubby rolled his eyes a little but agreed to try it! I love your style- even this list looks beautiful. Thanks!

Haha, mine shook his head at me rather than the eye roll, but at least he did it. :)

This is Great, Amanda! Alex and I are always looking for hobbies/Activities we both like. It’s Funny to be married to someone who likes such different things. We will definitely use this- thank you for making it and posting it!

Daniel and I are the same way—we like such different things!

I have to say, my bf rolled his eyes at the thought, but then when I read out the “foreign film” and “non-foreign film” thing, he laughed, and let me print it off. This is such a cute thing, and hopefully, like the rest of your work, it’s practicality and life-changingness will creep into our lives under the guise of cute, funny and gorgeousness.

Oh good, I was hoping someone would enjoy the foreign vs. non-foreign films bit!

This is SO AWESOME! I don’t even have a boyfriend to share it with and I think it’s awesome. I wish there were some way to use this to GET a boyfriend, because then we would have a million things to do together!
Hope to use it in the future. Thanks!

Maybe trying a new hobby would help you meet someone new in the process? Then I could add “& boyfriend finder” to the title to make it even longer! ;)

    Hey!
Thanks so much for the list! My husband and I have fourteen years under our belt, are happily married with two kids – but never do the date thing. We just can’t figure out what to do!! I’m thinking your list could help…
    Thank you!

My boyfriend and I had fun going through this list. Not really sure he was following the spirit when he crossed out ‘flying a plane’ and ticked ‘learn massage’ on my behalf though. ;)

So fun! I don’t have a husband or boyfriend, but my sisters and I live together and have recently realized how easy it is to sit in front of a movie instead of do anything. We are def going to do this tonight and then go DO things together!

  13. Rebekah

What a brilliant idea. We are in crazy mode right now, but this fall things should settle down (and give us more time for fun!), so I’m saving this until then. Thanks!

    Hey Amanda

Love your post! This is exactly what we are looking for. I guess we are on the right track to make this social marketplace successful!
