Fresh Figs

July 2nd, 2012

Before today I had never eaten a fresh fig. I’d been wanting to try one for a long time (since I figured Fig Newtons probably didn’t do them justice), but whenever I found them for sale they were all smooshy and rotten. Finally I found some ripe figs to try. It turns out that after all that waiting… I don’t really like them that much. Ha! Don’t get me wrong, they are all right, but figs are no pomegranates (my favorite fruit of all time). It’s possible that I set my expectations too high, but at least they’re cute! Have you ever had a fig?

  1. I have had a ripe fig before and i do like their taste a lot but Im allergic to nuts and the small seeds within the fig are nutlike. Thats why i cant have more then a fresh quarter without taking the risk of choking xD Sucks bigtime!

That does suck big time! Sometimes fresh fruit makes my mouth itchy, but luckily it isn’t so bad that I have to stop eating it.

  2. Hmm… looks like the one you tried isn’t actually ripe! smooshy is probably the right description for a ripe fig, and the center of it should look (and taste) like honey!! Mmm I can’t wait to eat some when i go to my parents house this summer…:) The figgerfly specimen is so cute!!!!

Oh! Well I will let the rest ripen a bit more and try them again. Maybe I’ll change my mind. ;)

  3. Well, even if they aren’t that tasty, they make beautiful photographic subjects!

I had the same experience…I love straight dried figs (which I highly recommend over fig newtons) and thought, “I must really be missing something eating them dried.” I’ve tried them fresh/ripe/squooshy three times. After each time, I go right out and buy another package of dried (seriously, so good!) and enjoy.

  5. You know, I’m not a huge fan of fresh figs but they can be pretty tasty baked and topped with mascarpone – there are lots of recipes out there.

But really, Fig Newtons are tastier ;)

  6. We moved into a house with a fig tree in the back yard last year, so I ate a *lot* of fresh figs last fall. I agree that it looks like your figs were a little under-ripe. That yellow stuff in the middle isn’t the nicest either. My favorite way to eat them is to put a little bit of gorgonzola on top of a fig half and then wrap it in a thin strip of prosciutto. The salt of the ham cuts the sweetness of the fruit perfectly. Yum!

  7. I just love fresh figs! When visiting Turkey last year, I consumed so many plucked right from the tree and nearly the size of a tennis ball. As Anastasia said, it doesn’t look like the one you ate was ripe. Was it dry? I hope you try them again!

It wasn’t terribly dry, but not overly juicy either. I’m letting the other ones I got ripen a bit longer before I try them!

  8. I’m sure my boyfriend doesn’t eat the skin….?

    • Amanda (wit & whistle)

I actually googled before I tried them, and most people recommended eating the whole thing skin and all. Maybe I’ll try just scooping out the middle.

  9. i connect figs with summer!
they are very tasty & you can even put them in the fridge & eat them cooler!
but i think the figs you have tried are not yet ripe & ready to eat!
that’s why you should try them again a little bit later!
& don’t eat the skin just the flesh! :)

    your fotos are beautiful!

  10. Ooh I love figs. They are great with goats cheese and honey on crackers.

  11. I’ve tried fresh figs before, too… and I didn’t like them that much either. I think it’s the texture more than the taste for me. We picked them off of my grandpa’s fig tree, and ended up using most of them for strawberry-fig preserves. Now that was good! :)
Oh and your figgerfly is absolutely adorable!

  12. I’ve only had fresh figs once at a friends house and they grilled it on the BBQ, just with some olive oil- that was good. Then they melted cheese on top of some of the grilled ones- that was REALLY good ;)

  13. I love fresh figs with some honey !

  14. I have those plates! Figs are yummy.

  15. i agree with being less than impressed with fresh figs, but i love them grilled or baked.

  16. Amanda (wit & whistle)

Thanks for all the tips everybody! With my remaining figs I’m going to let them ripen a bit more, and try them with all sorts of cheeses like you guys suggest. Maybe I can convince Daniel to grill a few! (I’m scared of our grill or I’d do it myself… it makes a big fireball when you light it.)

  17. I didn’t know that figs were so pretty! I haven’t had one yet, but I’d be willing to give it a shot.

  18. I have never eaten or used a fresh fig before… I am always willing to try something new.
    Are they seasonal?

    • Amanda (wit & whistle)

I think they are seasonal, because I don’t see them at the store most of the year.

  19. I love figs, I have a fig tree in my little garden, and… I can tell you…. the best thing about fig trees is the smell… there is not a perfume like that in the world…

fig+mascarpone+cinammon+pinch of brown sugar and just a minute in the oven grill…. just to dye for….

  20. My grandfather loved to tell the story of my first fig. He had a fig tree in his backyard, and was so excited to share the first fig of the year with his oldest granddaughter. There was lots of build up and excitement . . . and then I took one bite and spit it right out.

While I still don’t like fresh figs, I love fig paste and fig jam. One of my favorite grilled cheese is with artisan bread, fig jam, fresh mozzarella, and prosciutto. It is absolutely delicious.

    Hallo Amanda! :)
It is so amazing how on different places of our beloved Earth we have such a different experiences with such a simple things as food (fruits). I often think of some things as granted but than stories like this remind me, how colourful the world really is.
I love figs! I eat them directly from a tree at my mother-in-law’s place (she lives near the adriatic sea). They are sweet as honey, smooshy :) and I usually take them apart with my fingers and eat just the inside (dipping my teeth in the sweet flesh and getting all sticky around my mouth). They usually fruit twice a year, 1st in late june and 2nd time in august.
    I love fig jam also.
Figs are nevertheless a taste thing. My boyfriend does not like them at all (and he has a ‘dalmatian’ blood in his vaines) :)
btw. I like your blog and style very much (have find it today for the 1st time, but will stickt to it).
Wishing you all the best (and hope you will have some real, summer, sweet experience with the figs) ;)
    Irena from Slovenia.

  22. congrats on trying your first fresh fig! im still trying to get my husband to try one tehe. next you should try the green ones they often sell at the store- different variety = slightly different flavors! yay :)

I adore fresh figs. However they are divine if they are poached in syrup. Cool and serve with marscaponi. Mix mashed into greek yoghurt and serve with honey and walnuts.

  24. Here is a recipe you’ll love: Cut the figs partial
Oh in half. Stuff with brown sugar and a cinnamon stick. Grill on an outdoor grill until slightly charred and warm. (think a toasted marshmallow). Serve with vanilla or cinnamon ice cream!

I love your comments more than I love chocolate (almost).
