Hand Lettering Practice #1

I’m still honing my hand lettering skills, so I’m going to post a bit of my work each Friday for the next 5 weeks (like I did with gouache a few months back).

Does anybody want to practice with me? :)

If anyone wants to practice along with me and share your progress, I made a Pinterest board (right here) for us to pin our lettering work all in one place. If you send me a message right here and include a link to your Pinterest boards I will send you an invite to join the board. Your lettering doesn’t have to be amazing or anything—no pressure. Just have fun with it!

Excited! I loved when you did the weekly gouache posts, and I love hand-lettering, so this is going to be great! I look forward to each week!

i do! i want to practice with you! what’s the next assignment? ;) do we have goals? can we share our results?? can’t wait to see your posts every friday!

Ummm the assignment is to hand letter something, haha. It can be as simple as your name or as elaborate as your favorite quote. Next week I think I’m going to work on lettering some new birthday cards.

Great idea about sharing our results! I just created a Pinterest board for our communal lettering work. I think that’s probably the best way to do it. If you want to add your lettering to the board just let me know what your Pinterest username is, and I’ll add you to the board.

This looks so good! I love the ‘Thank You’ on the bottom left in the first photograph! I recently bought a new pack of illustration pens, so I’d love to join you in practicing hand lettering. :)

I’m so glad you want to join in Amy! I tried to add you to the board, but it looks like you have to be following me on Pinterest for me to be able to add you. If you would, follow witandwhistle on Pinterest and then I can add you! :)

    2. Amy

Think I’m following you now! :D Pinterest has been acting a little spazzy for me today. And thank you so much! Also. Your lettering is looking great!

I’ve been thinking about hand lettering too. I used to do calligraphy when I was a teenager and had all the time in the world. Oh to be back there and better use that time. Gah! I’ve followed the board. Lovely.

Oh I am so in! I just read a post on another blog where she suggested having a handwriting practice notebook, and immediately picked one up. I was going to start a 30 day writing project tomorrow already! Such a fun idea to share it on pinterest too. I’d love to join, username pinksuedeshoe

Ah, this’ll be a good little bit of encouragement! I really do need to expand on the sort of hand lettering I do, it’s tending to all look the same. cheyennebarton is my username. :)

Oh wauw, that looks great already! If this is practice, what does ‘for real’ look like then?? ;) I would love to join you on Pinterest, but my lettering isn’t nearly as good as yours. I think I’ll start following first :)

    1. Amanda (wit & whistle) Post author

Come on join us! Practicing isn’t about being good, it’s about improving. :)

    2. Amanda (wit & whistle) Post author

Great Ria! Just let me know what your Pinterest username is and I’ll add you.

My question – what are you using for your writing instrument. I noticed someone mentioned illustration pens, but wanted to check my choices before I go to the store. Thanks for a wonderful inspiration.

I’m in! I’ve been practicing my hand lettering here & there all summer. Funny how creative-minded people tend to think alike! Are you tracing anything to start your message? Trying to figure out how to start with the look of letter that I want…

I follow you on Pinterest now & my username is Kbatty. Yeah!!

    1. Amanda (wit & whistle) Post author

Nope, I don’t trace anything. I just start drawing and sometimes it looks good and sometimes it doesn’t. That’s why I need practice, haha!

    Amanda,
I’m addicted to scrolling through the community pinterest board looking for inspiration. I don’t suppose its still open to newcomers is it? I know it’s a long shot but I thought I’d ask :)
