The Simple Things

August 29th, 2012

The creators of Mollie Makes are coming out with a new magazine on September 6 called The Simple Things. This description of the mag is so lovely that I had to share it.

“The Simple Things is a new monthly print magazine celebrating the things that matter most. It’s about knowing the greatest rewards come from the simplest things, that there’s no satisfaction like that at the end of a long muddy walk, no pink so pretty as freshly-cut rhubarb, no perfume to compare with your own home-grown flowers. It’s about making warm inviting homes – big or small – sharing food with friends, growing your own vegetables. It’s about shopping for a coffee table only to find you’re happy with a tea chest. It’s keeping your dad’s old typewriter just because it’s beautiful. It’s an empty beach on a sunday morning. It’s backpedalling.”

Dreamy, no? Life is so much more enjoyable when we take time to appreciate the simple things! Here are a few of my simple things from this morning.

Waking up, making coffee or tea, and drinking it while visiting some of my favorite websites while sunlight pours in our sliding doors. It’s a thing I used to do daily, that I don’t do super often now that school has started back up, but I’m sure I will start again soon. Some other small things for me: my dogs growling/twitching in their sleep, quiet mornings (inside & out), catching my boyfriend looking at me at random times, the way paint/charcoal falls on paper when I’m making art, flickering candles, warm nights, real laughter, smiling strangers.

Ooo such good ones! Especially sleeping dog noises—I love it when they squeak. :)

I used to walk my dog and take me phone along to check emails, texts, etc. When I did this, my dog would deliberately stop in my way and not move until I put the phone away and pet her. I’m not kidding. So, now when I walk the dog I leave it all at home and I notice every single lovely and funny thing I see. And the dog is much happier when she looks up and I am looking back down at her with a kind word.
    This magazine sounds fabulous!

I have one silver teaspoon reserved from the rest of our neatly stored and rarely used silverware set. I use it every day when I make tea (or coffee for Husband).

My aunt did the same thing with one teacup and saucer from her lovely china set. She said it was a shame to keep the china stored away between holidays but didn’t want to subject the whole set to daily use.

This way we get to enjoy our lovely things without putting the whole collection through the vigor of daily use.

  4. What?!?! You play the uke? In NC? You’re not anywhere near Winston-Salem are you? I REALLY want to learn!

  5. Amanda (wit & whistle)

I’m in Cary. I’ve only had my uke for a few months, but I got the book “Ukulele for Dummies” and so far it has been pretty easy to teach myself!

  6. Ah, the simple things!
Stepping barefoot on the hot paving stone at my parents’ entrance.
Drawing in a moleskine notebook anyplace, anytime, ignoring even the traffic.
Reading so intensly that no noise bothers me.
    The smell of the sea.
Doing the blowfish face when putting my head under the water at the beach.
    His hugs.

Changing one’s plans because of the weather – and not being grumpy about it. Today I was going to dig on my allotment but it’s tipping with rain…..instead I shall sew an apron as a house warming present for a dear friend and enjoy the sound of the rain on the roof. Bliss.

  8. Both children napping at the same time. the. same. time. oh the joy!

    • Belinda-Jane

Oh Holly I’m with you on this! In fact just one child sleeping & the other one quiet right now is good…lol…but ahhhh the treasured delight in seeing their little faces awake even…bliss I never realised I’d find! And then there’s the holiness of solitary walks on the beach at sunrise/sunset too.

  9. A quiet morning before the rest of the house is yet awake. My first hot cup of coffee whilst assembling a quilt block…then a blog post of my own about said quilt block…then the *tink* sound that tells me I have a new email – nope an RSS feed notification that there’s a new Wit and Whistle blog post. Yea, it’s been a good day so far. Happy Thursday, Amanda and all :)

  13. so inspired! am going to do a post like this myself to appreciate all the simple thing in life and share it with the world :) it’s often hard to remind oneself about taking a step back, I think I’m better at it than some people I know but no one’s perfect!
