Mapping It Out

I’m delighted every time I ship my products to places I’ve never been, because it’s like sending a piece of myself out to travel the world. To record my “travels” I got a metallic silver map, a bunch of map tacks, and a cork board. I pinned the map to the board, and marked each state, province, or country I’ve sent packages to with a tack. Each location only gets one tack no matter how many orders I’ve shipped there. It took a while, but it was a great geography refresher. It turns out that Wit & Whistle products have made an appearance in 45 46 47 48 49 of all 50 US states!

(The map is actually silver and black, the filter makes it look more golden.)

UPDATE!

Four years later, I’ve swapped out my silver and black map with one I hand-drew myself and had printed on kraft paper. Check it out below! These are now for sale in my shop, and if you’d like you can buy one right here.

I love this idea! Such a cool way to see where your work has travelled.

As for the Nevada purchase *raises hand* I’ve been meaning to buy something from your shop and when I saw this I just had to :)

What a great idea! I’ve been wanting to document something about the places both my boyfriend and I have been. I lived in Japan for a while, and my BF travels for work and has gone to a ton of places. If it were a competition, he’d win for sure, but I wonder how it would look if we gave each other separate colors and saw the difference. XD

Awesome! Love this map! I’ve never seen one like this somehow and I love your idea with pinning your packages. I saw this over at You Are My Fav and, like I said over there, I’d feel bad for all of the places I hadn’t pinned yet! It’s be like a constant reminder… “why are you sitting here? There’s a world to explore!” I feel that enough already, ha!

Hi Mia, the map is from amazon.com—the link to buy one is above in the post. :)

I’m obsessed with maps…and have never seen one like this! Gorgeous! (I may link to my blog if that’s okay!)

My roommate and I pin our (boring blue) map with places we have been…and places we want to go (we haven’t actually beeeen to enough places to make it all rainbow-y with tacks yet ;)

    Hello,
Thank you so much for posting such a great and creative idea. Would you mind if I put a link to your blog as well?
My boyfriend and I just put up our map , and we had such a great time reliving all our memories from our trips around the world.
We did have to cut off Samoa and a bit of Russia to make the map fit properly inside of the cork, but it still looks great. Thanks for the fabulous idea, I adore your blog. :)

Sure, please do link to my blog! I had to trim a bit off my map too in order to make it fit. I’m so glad you and your boyfriend enjoyed making your own. :)

Thanks again! :) One day I have to visit Alaska in person. I’m dying to take a spin in one of those floatplanes.

Hi! So I’m really late in the game with this question, but I was wondering if the background of your map is white or metalic silver? I looooove the way that your map looks and I followed the link to order one for myself, but the ones on Amazon are silver and I’m not sure I like that.

Hi there, it’s pretty late for this but I was wondering how you got your background not to look like it’s silver metallic? I ordered the map and it is silver metallic but I loveee the way your map looks. I Just want it to look like it has a tan background.

The background of my map is silver too. It looks a little warmer in the photo because of the filter I put over the photograph.

i love this map. I’ve been looking to “map” my school vs. personal vs. work travels. First map I came across that I liked. Do you happen to have the dimensions of it. I clicked the Amazon link but nowhere does it give dimensions. I’m looking for something big but I like this one so much if it’s to small I might cut it up into even squares and mod pod it together!

I’m afraid I don’t have the original dimensions. I cut mine down to size to fit my 24″ x 36″ cork board, so the original map was bigger than that but it has been years since I did that, so I don’t remember how much bigger it was. You could try using the “customer questions & answers” feature on the amazon page. I’ve used that before to ask questions and have always gotten helpful answers.

Hi, I have been trying to make one of these myself but have had issue with the glue not sticking to the canvas board I used. How did you prevent this/what did you use? Thanks!

    1. Amanda (wit & whistle) Post author

Oh I didn’t glue mine! I just used a map tack in each of the four corners to secure the map to the cork board. If you look really closely in the photo you can see them.

Hey I know it’s been years since you posted this but I went to order the map and the one on amazon looks black and yours looks blue. Maybe it’s changed since its been so long? Or is yours really lack and it’s just the filter.

Hello! I love this idea and would like to make one myself. When going to your link for the map, I find the map that you have but the United States are not outlined individually like yours are. Where did you find the map with the United States outlined, or how can we create that?

  13. Zach

Hello, when I clicked the link for the map, I found a map really similar but the US state’s were not outlined. Is there another map you purchased or do you draw in your own states? Thank you!

    1. Amanda (wit & whistle) Post author

I purchased the exact map linked above and it had the state borders printed on it. It may just be that the product photo on Amazon is too small to show that level of detail. I can’t guarantee that they haven’t changed the map though, since it has been such a long time since I bought mine.

I love your comments more than I love chocolate (almost).
