Last week I stumbled across this image, and I immediately volunteered to bring a fruit salad to our friends’ Independence Day cookout. I tried to go for a red, white and blue theme, but unfortunately I couldn’t think of any white fruit to include.*
I’d like to make watermelon hearts for Valentine’s day, cantaloupe jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween, and honeydew shamrocks for St. Patty’s day. What a great excuse to expand my cookie cutter collection! The tricky part will be finding the right colored melon in time for each holiday.
* I just thought of a white fruit—white raspberries. Oh well, it’s too late now!
Pinneapple is kind of white when compared to the reds, maybe… Your salad looks yummy and patriotic too.
That’s true, pineapple would have worked!
LOVIN this salad! Soo cute! I’m glad I have something else to use my cookie cutters for! :3
Lychees!
Haha! Alissa I almost deleted this because I thought for sure it was a weird spam comment. Then I googled lychees. I have never seen those before! I have to find some to try.
So sorry! I guess I should have explained myself more – but I’m from Florida, and I forget that we use a lot of weird ingredients down here that no one else has heard of. :)
Lychees are DELICIOUS! Very tropical, very sweet, but a little bit of work to get them out of their red-shell-things. Although, I’m pretty sure that you can buy them canned as well, if they aren’t local to your area. If you do, save the “juice” in the can and use it to make a lychee martini!
They sound amazing! If I can’t find them fresh I will definitely keep an eye out for the canned variety. Thanks for introducing me to a new fruit!
Jicama would have worked too! :)
Yes, jicama is what I came up with, too. I’m definitely doing this salad! Thank you for the inspiration!
I usually add whipped cream to the top of my berry salads to add a touch of white for the 4th of July. :)
A white fruit/veggie (not sure which) called hikama (not sure of spelling) is really good seasoned with salt.
apples
Or Lychee’s that would of worked well in the red blue and white salad! or apples with the rind off – which you could use your cookie cutter on too!
Pears would have been nice & white
What about apples for the white part?
Yes! Lychee and/or Longan’s (similar to lychee) are super yummy and white!! Which is perfect for your “white” because they’re typically best from mid-June to mid-July. You can always find them canned at an Asian market or even the Asian aisle at your local grocers. Thanks for this fun and yummy idea! Can’t wait till this Fourth of July!! :)
So inspired! Would you mind if I pinned this to Pinterest?
Please do! :)
I’m thinking it looks red, white, and blue because you have it in a white bowl. It is perfect!!
What about slices of banana for the white?? Very cute idea!
if you cut apples crosswise the seed hole things make a star pattern!
Did you use all same size star cookie cutter? I have set with 1.5″ to 4 ” and wondering if that would look good in diff sizes. Love this idea!
I used all the same size since I only have one start cookie cutter. It would look great with different sizes!
I did it! :-)

Thanks for inspiration!

Carambola (star fruit) when cut crosswise are a natural star shape and an off-white color. Asian pears also come to mind with their creamy colored crunchiness might make a lovely white stripe element for the salad. On the other hand, this salad the way it is shown really appeals to me!
Okay! I’ve tried posting the image with the link to your page on my blog and it isn’t working! Is this something you have in your setup? I’d love to feature this amazing fruit salad on my blog for the 4th of July! Please? Thank you1 :D Just let me know if there’s a way to backlink!
I just emailed you Austin!
Ok, it’s going away from a healthy salad but to add the white touch, you could add a few mini marshmallows.
Silly question, but here goes …
How do you slice the watermelon before using the cookie cutters. This is a great looking fruit salad and I want to use it for our 4th of July cookout.
Thanks in advance.
Oh wait, I found the photo when I clicked on your original post. Yea!
Try bananas
I found frozen, pealed, sliced apples at Gordon Food Service that I’m going to be putting in this for the white.
Linking to this tomorrow! Let me know if it’s OK to use a pic!
Sure Tricia, go right ahead! :)
Super cute! I did this for our 4th of July/ 1st Birthday party:

Did you have a dressing with this like with bee vomit..?
Nope I didn’t add any dressing. Although I’m sure it would have been delicious with a little bee vomit stirred in. :)
Golden dew melon is a white melon like honeydue but white :) it’s yummy too!
Ok, I see someone asked how to slice the water melon before using the cookie cutters. But the she saw the original post? I have the same question, and I don’t see an original post. How DO you slice the watermelon first? :)
Just slice it like you would normally cut a watermelon to get triangle shaped slices. I cut mine into quarters and then slice each quarter. Then I punched out stars from the slices. All the pieces won’t be star shaped, you’ll have plenty of scraps leftover. Just put those on the bottom of your bowl.
This looks delicious and would be fun recipe for little hands to help with. I love it. I featured it in my blog post on 10 DIY Fourth of July Ideas Kids Can Help Craft. I’d love for you to take a peek if you have a minute:

I cannot wait to make this for the 4th of July BBq I’m going to.
I love your salad, I have a 4th of july breakfast with my family, I try to do everything in Red, white and blue, my ice cubes are stars with red cranberry juice with blue berries froze in the center, then i do white cranberry juice so it looks red white and blue. I do a layered jellow that red, white and blue, I like you try to do something on every holiday! I even do lights around my front door to match the holiday! so much fun, love your ideas!!!
It’s been a while since you posted this. You may have come up with the white fruit already, but if not, What about apples? Or not a fruit, but marshmallows? Just a thought.
Love the idea though!!!
Very cute.
I like it just the way you have it. The white bowl is the perfect white!
Hi! I make this salad every forth of july and I use large white coconut flakes in it! Have a great 4th! :)
banana is white too
Loving the beautiful salad!! As festive-looking as it is tasty!!! Just a bonus to know it’s as good for you as it looks! Thanks for sharing.
Amazing fruit salad. You could add tinned lychees for the white, they go very well with blueberries :)
I’m so excited to try this! I featured it on my Australia Day post with link back here :) http://healthyindesign.blogspot.com.au/2014/01/australia-day-party-ideas.html
The salad looks amazing I can’t to try it! I’m thinking about using coconut flakes to add a bit of white to salad!
I will be making for the 4th (tomorrow). Beautiful salad
Thank you so much for sharing.
White peaches. Yes, yellow is the most common, I’ve seen white peaches since I was little( age – don’t go there) and all the yeeeaaars I worked in grocery stores.
You could also cut out the tiniest shapes out of the most tender coconut you find for a tropical twist. Another alternate I can think of is dragon fruit…delicious contrast to offset berries :)
little white choclate nubs could also be melted and shaped into little stars… :)
