I’ve made many cakes the easy way—baked, frosted, and served right from the pan. I figured it was time I tried to make a real out-of-the-pan, multi-layered, decorated cake. So, I made Daniel a birthday cake over the weekend. It’s certainly not perfect, but I love how it turned out. Imperfections just make cakes charmingly rustic, right?
I went with white cake and buttercream frosting. Here’s the cake recipe I used, and here’s the frosting recipe. Delicious! Daniel isn’t a dessert person, but he even asked for seconds. The cake was so fluffy and moist, I’ll definitely be making that recipe again. The frosting was great too, but I couldn’t fully enjoy it knowing how many sticks of butter it contained!
Wow! This came out great! I love the frosting design.
The cake really is lovely. The way you did the frosting on top is simple but so sweet.
How pretty! I love the swirls at the top! Happy Birthday to Daniel! =)
your enjoying the frosting comment rings all too true! that’s why I try to make the mister do the cooking – ignorance is bliss. :)
Yum! It really looks great!
Goodness, girl! Your first cake looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL, and you did a great job on the frosting! Kudos for a job well done!
this sounds so good!!
So beautiful! I can’t believe this is only your first attempt, it looks absolutely delicious.
Ooh, do I spy the beehive cake stand from West Elm? I have it on my Christmas wishlist so I, too, can make a proper cake. Yours is lovely, by the way!
The icing job is fantastic! Great job, I’m drooling now :P
I love your cake! it’s so beautiful!
That’s really pretty. I’m so going to steal your design!
I’m impressed, what a lovely cake!
Also, the instagram picture of your dog on the sofa next to a guitar is so adorable. He looks like a fluffy pillow!
You mean cakes don’t have to come out of a box?? lol! That’s about the only kind of baking I do, but your cake is so pretty that now I want to try making one from scratch too!
Haha, well I did technically use a box mix for the cake! I just added a bunch of extra stuff too. It’s a good balance between from scratch and from box. ;)
homemade cakes are the best cakes! imperfections make it the real-deal…and you did such a beautiful job!
This cake not only looked fantastic but it tasted scrumptious! Yep, I got to have some. :D
Beautiful frosting! I know what you mean about not being able to enjoy cakes as much when you see how much butter (and sugar!) goes into them…
Looks SUPER delicious! I always try to forget about the ingredients when it comes to dessert. You just have to enjoy it! :)
Thank you so much. Your beautiful cake inspired me to try my hand at this recipe, it turned out wonderful. And you weren’t kidding about the butter!
