DIY Gift: Chalkboard Mug

A hand painted chalkboard mug is a great gift for anyone. Fill it with an assortment of loose teas and an infuser, or some coffee beans and biscotti. Personally I’d want my chalkboard mug gift to include cocoa, since I can’t get enough chocolate around the holidays (or the rest of the year for that matter).

Follow this DIY Chalkboard Mug tutorial to make your own mug with Pebeo’s porcelain paint.

Don’t forget to include some chalk with your mug gift. I’m loving this box from West Elm.

Whip up some homemade marshmallows with this Smitten Kitchen recipe, or buy these caramel marshmallows from Whimsy & Spice.

For cocoa mix, I’d include this Silly Cow Farms hot chocolate from Mignon Kitchen Co.

Wrap it all up in a cute gift box, and top it off with a festive candy cane or two!

I tried this using the same mug and paint and I had to put so many layers on to get it to be opaque that it got a little clumpy and the mug wasn’t smooth anymore. Do you have any tips for getting good coverage without lumps?

Use a really soft bristled brush—like a watercolor brush. That way the bristles don’t leave lumps and you get heavier coverage with each stroke than with stiff bristles. Even still my paint wasn’t perfect, there are a few lumps here and there. :)

What a great idea! I wonder if you could do something similar for regular drinking cups around the house. It would be nice to be able to chalk your name so you don’t end up washing more cups than necessary!

Hello, I saw that delicous Silly Cow Farms hot chocolate. And I checked out that webby you posted, but it seems that they don’t sell it anymore. Do you know if I can find it somewhere else. On a sidenote, I am from the Netherlands, so is it even possible to ship this delicious looking chocolate milk? Thanks on advance, I love your creativity!

I love your comments more than I love chocolate (almost).
