“How do you get your hair like that?”

I’m shocked and flattered that some of you have asked how I curl my hair. I’ve always been dreadful at hair styling, so I’m ecstatic that I’ve finally figured something out! I made a little video showing how I do it. It’s quick and easy. I have yet to find a product that will keep my waves in place in the summer humidity or in the rain, but when the weather cooperates these curls will last for days. Without further ado, please join me in my bathroom as I curl my hair. Your view is from just above the toilet seat where I balanced my tripod. Fancy!

Products I used:

Sedu Revolution Clipless Curling Iron
Pantene Non-aerosol Hairspray
Redken Smoothing Serum

I burnt out several clipless curling irons before splurging on a higher end one. If you want a less expensive iron this one was my favorite until it died. I love the Sedu one I have now. It heats up in seconds, works like a charm, and the heat resistant glove that came with it is a real finger saver.

Here’s a video summary if your attention span isn’t that long:

1. Put your damp hair in two braids before bed.

2. Take out the braids in the morning and your hair will be wavy. The braids already did most of the work!

3. Add a few curls here and there with a clipless curling iron to break up the braid waves a little bit and avoid the crimped look. Hold the iron upside down when you wind your hair around it. I don’t know why, but it works better that way.

4. Top your curls with a spritz of hairspray and a few drops of smoothing serum.

5. Done! The curls will relax and blend into big soft waves as you go on about your day.

I just started curling my hair recently. After years of having my hair either straight or in a messy bun on top of my head, it’s such a refreshing change. I find having at least 1 day old hair helps make the curl last longer. I’m yet to deal with the humidity though. Time will tell.

Yes, dirty hair definitely helps! My hair is pretty much always dirty since I only wash it 2 or 3 times a week. ;)

Heeey! First i love your blog and products, and for your i will be you 3 fan jaja.
I’ve never commented in your blog befor but right now it’s the time for it.
I need to tell you some secrest. The serum must be applied on the ends of your hair, the points pulling up against gravity. Serum it’s like vaseline (much better), so your hair only needs it in the end, because you need volume, right? so go for the ends.
Please tell me you do not sleep every day with your hair wet?!?!?!?!?!?!!?? that can damage so badly your hair, like falling, or something like that.
For you, that you have straight hair, use hair spray, cut your ends once a month (yes, a little bit just a little), use natural curles instead of the airon (i’ve always said that natural it’s beautiful, and your hair dont need be in constan treatments using artificial products).
Your hair it’s beautiful, indeed. Use creams for it, you will see diference.
    Peaceeee buenas vibrasss

Love the tutorial, and those curls look beautiful! You make it look so easy–I’m definitely going to try this soon! :) I’m curious though… what size curling iron do you use? I always get so overwhelmed by the different sizes and styles and models that going shopping for hot tools usually ends in exasperation and wearing my hair natural for months on end.

I have a 25mm barrel curling iron. It’s the perfect size I think—the curls aren’t too ringlet-y or too loose.

love this! what a fun video! I sometimes curl my hair in a similar way, but I’ll have to try this, especially starting with a braid! I didn’t know about a clipless curling iron, woah! I always get my hair stuck around mine.

Oh I love this tutorial. I have hair very similar to yours (not quite as long) and I’ve been desperate to create some type of curl, but all the videos are so long and confusing and most of all – super complicated! Your video was so easy I’m going to try this on the weekend. Thanks Amanda! :-)

  6. Jeanine

Oh my goodness! Gorgeous! Funny thing, I used to do my hair the Exact same way (in high school) ;D Looks amazing! I even sometimes now sneak in a night or two of braids but just for special occasions! This is amazing! Happy New Year thanks for these fab tips with the iron & good to hear from you again!

  7. Kara

thank you so much for this tutorial. My hair is not as long as yours, but I get stuck on a style and I stick with it until I want to shave my head (luckily it hasn’t come to that). I had never heard of a clipless curling iron, so I ordreed one of the ones you reccommended and based on your instructions tried it out this morning. It didn’t turn out as beautiful as yours and the glove and holding the iron are going to take some getting used to, but I think the effect will be worth it. Thanks for creating this extremely helpful style blog.
