Front Door Colors

Over the past few weeks we’ve been having tons of repairs done on the exterior of our house, and now we’re having it painted. The guys asked if I wanted the front door painted, and now I’m stumped. Have I ever told you how much I hate picking colors? I love blacks, beiges, greys, whites, and browns. I would make everything monotone if I could get away with it. I’m tempted to go with my gut and just paint the door dark brown, but maybe it would be fun to have a quirky door, even though I know I’ll get sick of it in 6 months and have to repaint. I did some rough Photoshop work to try out a few different colors.

Emerald green is nice and alpine-y, just like our house!

I like robin’s egg blue next to the brown trim and siding.

A deep, velvety cranberry color might work.

I also have to decide what color to stain the deck, so let me know if you’ve seen any good deck inspiration lately. I have no idea. I suggested staining it the same color as the trim and the guy looked at me like I was crazy, so maybe that’s weird. I’ve never even considered what color decks should be, I just know I don’t like the faded pinkish brown ours is now!

What color is your front door?

I like the cranberry color the best. The green is nice but matches to much to all the trees. Our house is a brown mustard type color and our front door is a brown.

  2. Rachel

Mine is a slighter darker shade of your emerald green! It does add a regal dash to the home. Robin’s egg blue looks like it would blend in too easily with the rest of the house front.

I am a guy so I am not really good at naming colors, but the red door seems the best choice to me. You can go with a mahogany timber decking (you don’t even need to paint it) and that will harmonise the entire exterior of your house.

  4. Heidi

The cranberry is beautiful! Our door is red, because we have a faded brick exterior with some ivy and I though it matched well–makes our house look very collegiate despite its size :) As my mother once said, “Don’t choose a paint color unless it makes your heart sing!”

  5. Myrte

I believe you are a winter type, so I think a light grey or pale wood decking and the robin’s egg blue door would suit your taste well, Amanda. It breaks up the nice dark browns of your home and gives it a bit more light and freshness. I hope you’ll give us an update on the chicks soon!

Thanks Myrte, I so am a winter type! :) Yes, I’m planning to do a chicken update just as soon as the guys working on our house are finished. It’s a disaster zone outside with tools and piles of scrap wood around our house, so I’m waiting to take photos when it’s all cleaned up.

It’s actually not a specific paint color, I just photoshopped the cranberry color to see how I liked it. ;)

I love that green color. It really brings the green of the woods to your house, it’s what I would pick! Right now our house has a deep plum door, and I adore it but am looking to mix things up soon!

The door on our old house was purple, and, despite being a fellow lover of neutrals, I really loved it! Of your mock ups, I think the blue is my favorite, followed closely by burgundy.
