An Original Painting

I got some new gouache paints and made this silly little painting. It made me snicker. I added it to my Etsy shop in case anybody out there shares my weird sense of humor and has a blank spot on their wall. ;)

How do you get the white gouache to come through so clearly? Everytime I paint white gouache on top of a darker painted background, the white gets watery and starts to blend in with the darker background. I love how defined your lines and white is but for the life of me can’t figure out how to do that on some of my more detailed gouache paintings! Any tips for the budding artist?

I only add a tiny bit of water so that the gouache stays very opaque. Some spots I’ll go over twice if they are too transparent. Also, I’ve noticed that the cheaper brands of gouache don’t cover as well as the pricier paints.

Hmm, I think you may be on to something. I just starting turning over to professional brand gouaches but do have a lot of student ones I want to use up. I know that Winsor & Newton is a good one; I have recently started with Talens. Thanks for your tip! Neat to see artists like you able to share your work so joyfully and make a living at it too :)

I love your comments more than I love chocolate (almost).
